Patrick Hall - Study for Faust Rising

Patrick Hall was born in Tipperary, Ireland. He studied at the Central School of Art in London under Cecil Collins, later moving to Spain in 1966 and returning to Dublin in 1974. Surrealist teachings would contribute to Hall’s fascination with the tension between the material and spiritual, drawing from the classical influences of Velazquez, Titian, and Goya whom he studied at the Prado, Madrid. In 1982, Hall was elected as a member of Aosdána.

Study for Faust Rising was part of The Vincent Ferguson Collection sold at Christie’s. A successful businessman and avid art collector of 20th century and contemporary Irish art, Vincent Ferguson’s personal collection included works by Basil Blackshaw, Terence P. Flanagan, Ross Wilson, David Crone, and Brian Maguire. Testament to the skill, talent, and breadth of Irish modern art, The Vincent Ferguson collection represented a celebration of Irish art and Ferguson’s own connoisseurship and respect amongst Irish art institutions and artists.

In 1996, Rising of Faust & Cry of Faust were donated to the Irish Museum of Modern Art by Vincent, and his wife, Noeleen. Study for Faust Rising exemplifies Hall’s continuous revitalising of classical subjects through an abstract lens. Included also in this 100 lot Art Auction is Hall’s painting, Untitled, a later exploration of similar themes utilising classical motifs in a modernist style.
