Artist Bio

Sir Herbert Hughes Stanton RA

Sir Herbert Hughes Stanton (1870-1937) was a British landscape artist who painted in oils and watercolours. His artistic talent appears to be a familial trait as his father and tutor William Hughes was a still life painter, along with his brother Talbot, and his son Blair Hughes-Stanton who was an engraver and illustrator. He often visited France, serving as an Official War Artist there and was presented with gold medals at the Paris Salon (1907;1908).
Stanton exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, at the Royal Academy, of which he was made a member, with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and at the Fine Art Society, among others. He was knighted in 1923 and a memorial exhibition was held in his honour at the Fine Art Society in 1937.
