Robert Spotten
Artist Bio
Born in the 60's in Northern Ireland, I started to paint at the age of 15, using art as an escape. I specialised in wildlife paintings and studied art for A'Level. At 17, I started a jewellery apprenticeship.
After my A'Level, I participated in a few local exhibitions and sold my work through private commissions and in galleries throughout Ireland, earning a reputation as the "bird" man and painting local landscapes in oil and watercolour.
I married in 1998 and worked for a while in the South of France to learn local jewellery making techniques. There I discovered the light!
In 1999, I founded Causeway Jewellery Creations, now called Robert Spotten Jewellery Designs to design and manufacture jewellery, devoting more time to developing the business and enjoying family live; having less time, regretfully, for painting.
I have now completed my degree in Contemporary and Applied Arts at the University of Ulster.
Inspired by space, nature, the sea and my surroundings, my palette has changed over the years, influenced by the vibrant light of the South of France.
Brigitte Le Boulleur-Spotten was born in the South of France. Her work has been centred around the theme of Motherhood. She works in textiles, clay, glass and metal. A daughter and grand-daughter of jewellery designers, she helps Robert Spotten in his jewellery business and proposes her own designs.
More recently, her work has been on Irish linen, making bookmarks and cards representing the local scenery.
Robert and Brigitte work together on topics such as the environment and the preciousness of water.
