Rachel McCormick
Artist Bio
Rachel McCormick lives and works as an artist in rural Derry/Londonderry. She is a graduate of Ulster University, obtaining her BA Hons in Fine Art, Painting.
She is inspired by the French Impressionists, Post Impressionists and German Expressionism. She cites Matisse, Bonnard, and Gauguin among her major influences, saying, “In their paintings, it’s the passage of light, the vibrancy, the drama, the warmth of the Mediterranean which brings the joy.” Her paintings are included in private collections in the USA, Europe, UK and Ireland.
Her intuitive creative process produces dramatic, uplifting results which always feel ‘fresh’. The painterly quality of her work is maintained by the vigour and spontaneity of the brush strokes. The oil colours are clean, the canvas is allowed to breathe, - nothing muddy, nothing overworked. The immediacy of her approach captures a natural optimism and her subject matter ranges from cattle to crockery, forests to furniture. The results are joyful, colourful celebrations, reflecting in paint the artist’s emotional response to the visual world.
