Hans Iten RUA

Hans Iten (1874-1930) was a landscape and flower painter born in Zurich. He studied at the School of Art, St Gall, Switzerland and then worked in Paris. In 1904 he moved to Belfast and was soon closely associated with the Belfast Art Society, elected its president in 1906.

 

Hans was particularly influenced by the Irish landscape and so many of his works consisted of scenes from Antrim and Cushendall, which rewarded him with a very positive reputation. In 1908, his work was in the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Belfast Art Society. From 1908 to his death, Iten showed nearly 50 of his works in the RHA.

 

In 1930, Hans was one of the first of the nine academicians elected to the Ulster Academy of Arts, however he was not in good health and died later on that year back in Switzerland.
