Edward Montgomery O'Rourke Dickey CBE

E.M. O’Rourke Dickey (1894-1977) was a Belfast born wood engraver. He studied painting under Harold Gilman at the Westminster School of Art and gained a Master’s degree from Cambridge University.
A founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers (1920), he was awarded the CBE in 1952. Dickey was also a distinguished educator, working as a professor of fine art and director of King Edward VII School of Art, Armstrong College and Durham University. He was also appointed an art master at Oundle School and as staff inspector of art for the Ministry of Education.
His other accomplishments include being employed as secretary to the War Artists’ Advisory Committee, of which he was a full member, and becoming the first curator of the Minories Galleries in Colchester. The artist was an avid painter exhibiting with the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and the Belfast Art Society, among many others.
