One hundred years on, Ross’s offers unparalleled expertise in valuation and auctioneering across several specialist departments. Whether it be antiques, painting, jewellery or general house contents, Ross’s has been for decades the place to go.
Established in 1923 the company first opened its doors in nearby Chichester Street. By 1934 the auction house expanded its facilities across three floors to its current premises on the corner of May Street and Montgomery Street in Belfast City Centre. The company expanded its offerings to include a wide range of goods, from fine art and antique furniture to collectibles and jewellery. With a growing clientele, they moved to larger premises to accommodate the burgeoning interest in their auctions. The business occupies a landmark Grade B listed building equidistant from the Royal Courts of Justice & Belfast City Hall.
One of the key factors behind Ross’s success was their willingness to adapt to the times. As technology advanced, the auction house embraced it. They were among the first in the region to establish an online bidding platform, allowing buyers and sellers from all over the world to participate in their auctions. This move not only broadened their customer base but also elevated their status as a modern and progressive auction house.
Beyond their auctions, Ross’s has played an integral role in Belfast’s cultural landscape. They’ve been involved in charity auctions, helping to support local causes and organizations. Since the 1980’s Ross’s has been headed by Chartered Surveyor Daniel Clarke, an associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers and a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He is joined on the board by his son Angus Clarke who is an estate management graduate.
