Lot 7 - Fishing Boats at Ardglass by Colin Davidson

April Art Auction Lot 7 - Fishing Boats at Ardglass by Colin Davidson

Colin Davidson is a contemporary artist, born in Belfast. He graduated from studying Fine Art and Design at University of Ulster in 1991. His early work focused on urban themes capturing scenes of cities through unusual perspectives, between 2006 and 2010 he created paintings based on the reflections created in city windows. In 2021, he became Chancellor of Ulster University.

Davidson is an academician of the Royal Ulster Academy and served as president between 2012 and 2015. Various portraits by him are held at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Ulster Museum and the National Gallery of Ireland. He has also received numerous awards from the RHA, RUA, and the 2012 BP Portrait Vistors’ Choice Award at the National Portrait Gallery. His acclaimed portrait exhibition, Silent Testimony, was first displayed at the Ulster Museum before touring to the Irish Arts Centre in New York and the National Portrait Gallery in London.

He often focuses on large-scale portraits centred around thematic studies. While his subjects have varied from portraits to city studies and harbour scenes, his technical approach easily translates between such subjects. He often uses a palette knife to apply layers of oil painting before working finer details with brushwork. In Lot 7, a contrast is achieved between the more rigid structure of the harbour compared to the fluidity and movement of the surrounding sea. The boats appear orderly through angular lines and fine details compared to the rich palette and movement captured in the sea.
