Description:
Painted one year before John Hewitt's essay on Blackshaw, 'Portrait of a Young Man', was published On the Road to Clough may be an example considered by Hewitt as he compared the early work of Blackshaw with French impressionist, Paul Cezanne. While Blackshaw would have come across Cezanne's work and other modernists through reproduction photographs, it was not until 1951 when he travelled to Paris and London with Kenneth Mahood he would have seen such masterpieces in person. These artistic influences shaped the formative years of Blackshaw's art.
Hewitt wrote 'So Cezanne, Blackshaw thinks, is Expressionist in his "little sensation", and in the unity and multiplicity of the tensions which he co-ordinates to express that "sensation", although at first glance the resultant painting may seem to be merely of a mountain or a bowl of apples. In his more recent work, Blackshaw grasps the example and then travels his own road.'
Blackshaw captures the feeling of a sunny day in the present painting with bright white and yellows. The wild growth of a hedgerow and distant farmhouses are stylised through colour and texture. Rolling hills with a long stretch of road draws the viewer in as the dark hedgerow breaks up the composition from structured, flat planes into wild, loosely painted plants. The simplistic five box-like buildings in the background hint towards the architectural style of Cezanne through a simplification of forms.
On the Road to Clough infuses impressionistic principles as Blackshaw captures the sensation of a summer's day, rather than a realistic representation. To capture an emotional response to the subject would require a deep understanding of its content, it is apparent that Blackshaw's rural upbringing shaped his ability to effectively capture the feeling of a place.

First Time Buyers
If you have not bought through a Ross's Online Auction before please read the following guide. Our Conditions of Sale may be accessed at any point and should be read in conjunction with this short guide.
What is a Online Auction?
An online auction is an automated online-only auction which takes place solely on our website, www.rosss.com. The sale will commence at a designated time and date and will run for a specified number of days. The sale will end with every lot finishing at 20 second intervals up until the sales completion. (Please note: Each individual lot displays a unique end time.)
Sale Procedure
To bid on a lot you must register a MY ROSS'S account and login. Once logged in you are ready to place bids online at anytime up until the noted end time of each lot. If your bid is accepted, you will be notified that you are the current highest bidder. If you are outbid you will be notified by email and have the option to bid again and if you win a lot you will receive an invoice by email after the auction's completion.
Maximum Bid
You may leave a maximum bid which will instruct the computer to bid on your behalf only as much as required for you to remain the highest bidder up until your limit. This means that you may win an item for less than your maximum bid, however you can also be outbid if someone enters a higher maximum bid. If you are outbid you will receive an outbid notification by email. Please note: Only you will know what your maximum bid is. If you enter a maximum bid amount that matches that of another bidder, precedence will be given to the bidder who placed the bid of that amount first and you will be asked to bid again.
Bidding Increments
Bidding increments will be as follows: 0-100 by £10, 100-500 by £20, 500-1000 by £50, 1000-5000 by £100, 5,000-10,000 by £200, 10,000-25,000 by £500, 25,000+ by £1,000. Bids are received in both GBP and EUR and accordingly Increments may differ if a bid is received in EUR.
Anti-Snipe Feature
In designing this website, Ross's have employed over one hundred years' auctioneering experience to replicate events as closely as possible as they occur in the saleroom. If a bid is placed in the final minute of the auction, the lot's end time will be extended back up to 60 seconds. This feature ensures that underbidders have a fair opportunity to respond to the bidding.
