Opal

Opal is a unique gemstone celebrated for its dazzling display of shifting colors, known as “play-of-color.” Depending on how light hits the stone, flashes of blue, green, red, orange, and purple can appear across its surface, making every opal completely one of a kind. The name “opal” is believed to come from the Sanskrit word upala, meaning “precious stone.”

The most famous opals come from Australia, which produces the majority of the world’s supply. Other important sources include Ethiopia and Mexico. Opals form when silica-rich water fills cracks in rocks and gradually hardens over time.

Unlike many gemstones, opal contains water within its structure, which gives it a slightly softer nature, ranking between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Because of this, opals require gentle care to maintain their beauty.

Throughout history, opals have been associated with creativity, hope, and mystery. In ancient times, people believed the gemstone possessed magical qualities because it displayed the colors of many other gems. Today, opal is recognized as the birthstone for October and remains admired for its vibrant beauty and ever-changing appearance.
