Aquamarine
Aquamarine is a beautiful blue-to-blue-green gemstone belonging to the beryl family, the same mineral group as emerald. Its name comes from the Latin words aqua marina, meaning “sea water,” a fitting description for its calm ocean-like color.
Most aquamarines are found in countries such as Brazil, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Pakistan. The gemstone forms in large crystals, which allows cutters to create clear, elegant gems in many shapes and sizes.
Aquamarines are admired for their transparency, durability, and soothing appearance. On the Mohs hardness scale, they rank between 7.5 and 8, making them suitable for everyday jewelry such as rings, necklaces, and earrings. Lighter blue stones are more common, while deeper blue aquamarines are considered especially valuable.
Historically, sailors believed aquamarines protected them during voyages and calmed rough seas. The gem has also been associated with tranquility, clarity, and harmony. Today, aquamarine remains a popular choice for both modern and vintage jewelry designs and is recognized as the birthstone for March.
