Born in Somerset, Leonard Richmond (1889–1965) was a highly versatile painter, commercial poster designer, author, and educator. Best known for his vibrant landscape paintings and iconic mid-century railway travel posters, Richmond served as the official editor of The Artist magazine.
Richmond spent a large part of his career in Canada serving as official war artist during World War I. In the 1920s and 1930s he designed posters promoting the Canadian Pacific Railway and later produced posters for London Transport. During the 1930s, he visited St Ives regularly, taking a studio there in 1932, and setting up a summer painting school in 1935.
With his background creating visually striking posters, in Lot 4, Near Le Puy, France, Richmond effectively utilises a rich colour palette and great depth to produce a tranquil landscape of the French countryside.
Richmond was awarded several prizes including the Tuthill Prize (1928) at the Chicago International Watercolour Exhibition and a silver medal (1947) at the Paris Salon.
Examples of his work are held by several public collections including The British Museum, the National Railway Museum; The National Trust, Newport Museum and Penlee House Gallery. His work is held in the Government Art Collection and Imperial War Museums, in both London and Canada.
