Lot 4 - Ideas from a Sketchbook by Henry Moore OM CH FBA

Henry Spencer Moore was an English visual artist. He is best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures. Moore also produced many drawings, along with other graphic works on paper.

Born in 1898, Moore studied at the Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In 1946, Moore's first international retrospective was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1948, Moore represented Great Britain at the 24th Venice Biennale and won the International Prize for Sculpture.

From the 1920s as a student, Moore used sketchbooks to make studies of sculptures and animals and to record ideas for his own sculptures, drawings and textile designs. This lithograph in the current auction is titled, Ideas from a Sketchbook, it provides an insight into his artist process as the two-dimensional figurative drawings came to fruition in three-dimensional sculptures, like the famous Reclining and Recumbent Figures. The figures are abstracted yet retain a sense of human fluidity, adopting unique and interesting postures that suggest movement with the monochromatic tones. This lithograph exhibits the iconic style of Moore which was translated to monumental sculptures.

Moore continues to be celebrated as the most important British sculptor of the twentieth century and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom.
