Artist Bio

Peter Prendergast was born in Abertridwr, South Wales in 1946. His father was born in Ireland but moved to work in the Welsh coal mines in 1917. His mother was raised in Cardiff. In spite of growing up in South Wales, Prendergast has discussed how being raised Catholic, along with Irish culture and particularly the work of Jack B. Yeats shaped his perception of the world in spiritual terms. He also named Cezanne, Rouault, Pollock, and Josef Herman as artistic influences. He attended Cardiff College of Art between 1962-64, before enrolling at Slade School of Fine Art 1964-67, and continuing his postgraduate studies at Reading University until 1970. Whilst at Reading, he first met Len Tabner, a fellow artist who became a lifelong friend. During this time, Euan Uglow, Gomer Lewis, and Frank Auerbach were influential teachers at Slade shaping modern British art.

In 1970, Prendergast moved to Bethesda in North Wales. He taught at Liverpool College of Art between 1971-74. As well as teaching, Prendergast served on the Welsh Arts Council for four years and was an executive member of the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales in 1979-1980. In 1987, he spent time working in Cork as part of a Wales-Ireland artistic exchange and in 1999, he was an invited artist at International Workshops in NI & Wales. In 2000, he was invited to participate in a consultative document for art by the National Museums and Galleries of Wales.

In 2004, a solo exhibition of Prendergast’s work was held at the Boundary Gallery and in 2006, a retrospective of his work was held at The Museum of Modern Arts in Machynlleth. His work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery and British Museum, and he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Prendergast died in January 2007.
