Artist Bio

Lionel Edwards, RI

Lionel Edwards (1878-1966) was born in Clifton and was a hunting, horse racing and military artist. Edwards himself was a hunting man and so spent most of his life combining the two. Sometimes he even made sketches on the spot.

Lionel made a living by providing many works for newspapers such as The London News, The Graphic, The Sphere, The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News and Country Life. His hunting prints were produced after his paintings and it seemed that as time moved on his artwork became more traditional. Edwards preferred medium was watercolour however he did experiment with oils later in his life.

Stella Walker wrote a book called ‘British Sporting art in the twentieth Century’ and in it she described Lionel Edwards as ‘The grand old man of sporting art’.
