Joseph McWilliams PPRUA

Joseph McWilliams (1938-2015) was an Irish artist known for his satirical depictions of Orangemen and images of the Troubles. He studied both at the Belfast College of Art and the Open University.
Aside from painting he taught at various schools, including in Ulster Polytechnic and the Schools for the Deaf and Blind. He also worked as an art columnist for the Irish News and spoke at several international events on the visual arts in Northern Ireland.
McWilliams held numerous exhibitions, showing work regularly with the Royal Ulster Academy, of which he was made a member and served as its president (2000-2004). In 1986, along with his wife and fellow artist, he opened the Cavehill Gallery in Belfast. His work is held in several important collections, including the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland and the National Museums Northern Ireland.
