Gladys Maccabe HRUA

Gladys Maccabe was an Irish artist born in 1918 in Randlestown, Co. Antrim. She studied at the Belfast College of Art, along with working as a fashion and arts correspondent for newspapers and television. Gladys exhibited regularly with fellow artist and husband Max Maccabe and was part of The Contemporary Ulster Group along with Dan O’Neill, George Campbell and Gerard Dillon.
She was made an honorary member of the Royal Ulster Academy, formed the Ulster Society of Women Artists (1957) and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the arts by Queen Elizabeth (2009).
Maccabe’s paintings feature the everyday lives of people, flowers, still life, some abstract works, and during the Troubles she felt obliged to depict the events and suffering she witnessed.
