Erskine Nicol RSA ARA

Erskine Nicol (1825-1904) was a Scottish born artist who often painted rural landscape scenes and portraits of local people. He travelled to Dublin for a teaching residency in 1846 and left with a great affinity for the Irish people, heavily influencing his work. His humorous portrayals of working class Irish characters proved very popular. However Nicol also had a more serious side to him, translating into paint the horrific events that occurred during the famine in nineteenth-century Ireland.
The artist exhibited regularly with the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy, the former of which he became a member (1859) and the latter of which he became an associate.
