Artist Bio

Craigie Aitchison was a Scottish painter. He was born in Edinburgh in January 1926. His family often spent summer holidays on the Isle of Arran, a landscape which would often appear in his paintings. Aitchison initially studied history, then law, but became increasingly disillusioned with his studies. After encountering artists, Adrian Daintrey and Gerhart Frankl, Aitchison enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art.

Aitchison’s style is particularly naïve, utilising bright colours and simplistic compositions of landscapes and portraits. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1978 and was elected a full RA member in 1988. He has held several retrospectives of his work during his lifetime, including at the Serpentine Gallery in London, Harewood House in Leeds, and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. He was a part-time teacher at the Chelsea School of Art from 1968 to 1984. His works are in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Museum Wales in Cardiff, among many other collections. In 1999 he was appointed a CBE. Aitchison died in 2009 in London.
