Artist Bio

In 1904, Clifford Hall was born in Wandsworth, South London. His family moved to Richmond shortly after Hall was born. Between 1915-21, he attended King’s College School, Wimbledon. From 1921, he attended classes at Richmond School of Art, under Charles Wheeler, and then full-time study at Putney School of Art followed by the Royal Academy schools. During his time at the RA Schools, Hall began receiving portrait commissions and was awarded the Landseer Scholarship in painting. This enabled him to set up as a professional portrait painter with a studio in Twickenham. He frequently visited Paris, staying for long periods of time, and briefly studying under André Lhote.

Hall’s first solo show was held in 1929 at the St Martin's Gallery, London. In the early 1930s, he encountered the art dealer Lillian Browse who supported further exhibitions of his work in London at the Leger Gallery and Helen Lessore's Beaux Arts.

Clifford Hall’s memorial exhibition was held at the Belgrave Gallery in 1977. His work is represented in several UK public collections including the Imperial War Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Arts Council Collection, as well as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
