Artist Bio

Alice Maher is a leading contemporary artist known for her thought provoking sculptures which she comprises using natural materials such as human hair and sheep tongues. Taking influence from cultural history, folklore, fairy tales and medieval history, she produces work using a variety of media including drawing, sculpture, installation, print, photography and animation.
Maher was born in 1956 on a farm in Tipperary, attending Crawford College in Cork, University of Ulster in Belfast and San Francisco Art Institute.
The artist has exhibited across Ireland, the UK and the US, including The Douglas Hyde Gallery, the David Nolan Gallery in New York and the Purdy Hicks Gallery in London. She represented Ireland at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1994 and a retrospective was held of her work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2012.
