Joseph William Carey RUA

Joseph William Carey was a seascape and landscape painter born in Belfast. He trained as an illustrator with Marcus Ward & Co. Carey was one of the original members of the Belfast Ramblers’ Sketching Club. In 1893, he showed his first work at the Watercolour Society of Ireland exhibition and contributing a total of seventy pictures over the years. Carey was an active member of the Belfast Art Society and when the Ulster Academy of Arts was founded in 1930, he became an academician.

A highlight of Carey’s career was a commission from the Ulster Hall to produce thirteen scenes from Belfast history, which was completed in 1903, then exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1915-1935.
